Prior to 2004, there was no trellis; just a flower bed with an assortment of perennials, grasses, and shrubs. Then my husband built the trellis on which I have planted two native wisterias, which are much slower to cover than the Asian varieties.

Structural elements, like this trellis, invite you to explore. Beard Tongue, Rose 'The Fairy', and Jerusalem Sage grow together happily in this bed.
Jerusalem Sage (Phlomis fruticosa) is an "evergrey" subshrub that prefers sharply drained, poor soil. Penstemon smallii is a beautiful native Penstemon, demanding a light, well-drained soil.
Chrysanthemum x 'Emperor of China' has silvery-pink flowers in October.
