Turning the corner of the house, a planting of variegated shrubs and perennials draws you into the backyard.

Entrance into the Backyard Gardens. A native spring ephemeral, the flower of 6" tall Bloodroot is enclosed in the curled leaf.
Fallopia japonica 'Variegata' (False Mexican Bamboo) is as beautiful in the shade garden as it is in the sunny border. Aspidistra, old-fashioned Cast Iron Plant, takes on a new look with yellow variegation.
Arisaema dracontium (Green Dragon) has an unusual flower spath. Labrador Violet politely self-seeds into the garden but is easily eradicated if you find a need to.
After losing its foliage, the flower heads of Edgeworthii gardenia are very prominent and come into bloom in late winter. I forgot to mention its delightful fragrance!
