We had a problem with water running down the slope into the entrance area of the hangar. Since my husband loves reds and oranges, this bed is centered around those colors. The west side of the island Hangar Bed receives hot late afternoon sun.

Spring color at the hangar. My very first peony... Paeonia 'Bravura' purchased from Lolita Powell in Princeton, N.C. ...got me hooked.
Thermopsis villosa (Carolina Lupine), a beautiful native, is a 3-to 5-feet tall perennial sporting yellow, pea-like spikes in early spring. A purple German Iris is highlighted with a laser-etched metal butterfly.
Iris siberica 'Butter and Sugar' lives up to its name. A beautiful blue that blends with the reds, oranges and yellows at the Hangar bed, Geranium 'Rozanne' blooms all summer.
Campanula takesimana is a great bellflower for the South. Its arching form adds a different dimension to the garden. Perennial Heliopsis helianthoides 'Summer Sun' and annual Calibrachoa (Million Bells).
Lillium lancefolium 'Florepleno' (Double Tiger Lily). Some love it; some don't. Natives Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii (Turk's Cap) and Salvia x 'Indigo Spires.'
Turk's Cap has red blossoms that are visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. Helianthus 'Lemon Yellow' in October with long-blooming Salvia x 'Indigo Spires.'
