In the middle of the back yard, we wanted a place to grow
beautiful ferns and other plants that like a little more moisture. We dug
out 18” down, lined the depression with heavy-duty plastic and used a
pitch-fork to punch holes all in it, and filled it up with good soil.
Viola! By the time the hole was filled with plants, this project cost us
$500!!

Fine textured ferns accent the bold foliage of other shade lovers. |

Epimedium grandiflorum x pinnatum 'Sulphureum' is vigorous, with evergreen leaves and yellow flowers in spring. |

Hosta 'Sunpower' serves as a beacon in the shade garden and is a great companion for Autumn Fern. By the way, both fared beautifully during the 2007 drought. |
 |
Paeonia obovata (Woodland Peony) is an exquisite addition to the shade garden. |
 |
Rose of Sharon grows and blooms beautifully in the shade garden. The variegated one, Hibiscus syriacus 'Meehanii,' is a show-stopper. |
