In the middle of the back yard, we wanted a place to grow beautiful ferns and other plants that like a little more moisture. We dug out 18” down, lined the depression with heavy-duty plastic and used a pitch-fork to punch holes all in it, and filled it up with good soil. Viola! By the time the hole was filled with plants, this project cost us $500!!

This bed features ferns, epimediums, variegated Solomon's Seal, and large Hosta 'Sunpower'. Fine textured ferns accent the bold foliage of other shade lovers.
Chinese Cobra Lily (Arisaema engleri 'Purple Spathe') in the $500 Hole. Epimedium grandiflorum x pinnatum 'Sulphureum' is vigorous, with evergreen leaves and yellow flowers in spring.
$500 hole with maidenhair fern in the foreground. Hosta 'Sunpower' serves as a beacon in the shade garden and is a great companion for Autumn Fern. By the way, both fared beautifully during the 2007 drought.
Paeonia obovata (Woodland Peony) is an exquisite addition to the shade garden. Rose of Sharon grows and blooms beautifully in the shade garden. The variegated one, Hibiscus syriacus 'Meehanii,' is a show-stopper.
