In early spring, I hear “What is that?” when the Fothergilla is in bloom. Again in the fall, the magenta berries of Callicarpa americana triggers the same question.

A new daffodil to my garden, first blooming in the spring of 2008, Narcissus 'Intrigue' opens yellow and matures to white. Native to the Southeast, Fothergilla 'Mount Airy' offers three seasons of beauty: fragrant blooms in the spring; a neat, vigorous shrub in summer; and fantastic fall color.
Fothergilla 'Mount Airy' with its beautiful fall color. One of the few plants purchased from Jackson & Perkins, this daylily is appropriately named 'Wine Time' and is interplanted with the above narcissus. The emerging daylily leaves camouflage the dying daffodil foliage.
Large clusters of magenta berries appear on native Callicarpa americana (Beautyberry) in late fall. They remain for months.....or until the birds eat them. Swamp Sunflower,Helianthus angustifolius, is a fabulous companion plant for Beautyberry since they bloom at the same time. It is also a native plant.
