A slow stroll down the path through the backyard gives you an opportunity to check out the borders all both sides.

Backyard Stroll in early spring. Calycanthus floridus 'Athens' is a very fragrant, yellow flowered form of our native Sweetshrub.
The native witchhazel blooms in the fall; the Chinese variety blooms in the spring. I have both, planted side by side. If I'm lucky, Digitalis ambigua self-seeds into the woodland garden.
Although they don't bloom in the shade, Cannas make a marvelous background for this tall Log Fern. Some peonies do bloom beautifully in the shade.
The flowers of Hydrangea serrata 'Greyswood' are pink and blue. Butcher's Broom, Ruscus aculeatus, is a 2-foot tall evergreen shrub; loves shade; is drought tolerant; is deer tolereat; and has red berries all winter. To boot, it seeds in so that you can make a thicket or share.
When planted as small seedlings, Black-Eyed Susans become acclimated to the shade garden and bloom in June. The blooms of Camellia sasanqua 'Apple Blossom' are prominent in October.
The spathe of Pinellia tripartita is creamy outside and purple inside. It does reseed a little. Who wouldn't want more of this shade-loving beauty?
